How to set up Login.gov for FMCSA systems

Login.gov is the sign-in service used by federal systems including FMCSA services. It proves who is signing in; the FMCSA system still controls the company, employer, driver, or C/TPA access behind that sign-in.
TIME: Account creation may take a few minutes; identity or agency verification can take longer
COST: No Login.gov account fee

Before you start
An email address you control and will keep
A phone or another supported authentication method
An accepted, unexpired identification document if identity verification is requested
Your personal information exactly as it appears on the identification document
The FMCSA service you are trying to reach and your role in that service
Get it done
01
Begin from the FMCSA service
Start at Motus, the Clearinghouse, or the other official FMCSA page you need, then choose the Login.gov sign-in option. Beginning from the agency helps return you to the correct service after authentication.
02
Use an email address you will retain
Create the Login.gov account with an address you personally control and can recover. When FMCSA instructs an existing company official to use an email already associated with the company record, follow that agency-specific instruction.
03
Add more than one authentication method
Login.gov supports several security methods. Set up a backup method when available so a lost phone does not become a lost company-access problem.
04
Complete identity verification when requested
Enter your information carefully and use clear, uncropped ID images without glare. Login.gov may offer online or in-person verification options depending on the partner agency and situation.
05
Return to FMCSA and confirm the correct role
A successful Login.gov sign-in does not automatically grant access to a carrier or assign the correct Clearinghouse role. Finish the company, employer, driver, or C/TPA connection inside the FMCSA service.
06
Save recovery information securely
Keep the personal key and backup authentication method in a secure place. Do not put passwords, Social Security numbers, ID images, or authentication codes in the compliance tracker.
GO TO THE RIGHT PLACE
Open Login.gov
Get official Login.gov help
Use Login.gov support for sign-in, authentication, or identity-verification trouble. Use FMCSA support for company records, roles, and registration status.
What to save when you finish
The email address used for the account
A secure record of backup authentication methods
The Login.gov personal key in a secure location
FMCSA confirmation showing the connected company or role
Login.gov can help with sign-in and identity verification, but it cannot change an FMCSA application, company record, role, or registration status. Use the FMCSA service's support channel for an agency-access problem.
Filing it is the easy part. Remembering the next one is what gets people.
